Footprints: Bad Luck Charm Page Process (Page 5)

Only two days left on the Footprints: Bad Luck Charm Kickstarter, and we’ve already explored the behind-the-scenes of Pages 1, 2, 3, and 4… onto Page 5!

This page is pretty straightforward. The only real deviation from the script is panel 5.3, which originally called for a medium shot or so of ‘Resa placing her bet. Smartly, Jonathan conserved space and changed it to a close-up with an off-panel balloon. It just wasn’t necessary to show that many details, not when the location has already been firmly established and we can infer what she’s doing from the context of the scene and her dialogue. Great example of an artist being economical with space.

But what I love about this page are the small details; things mentioned in the script but really brought to life by the art. The best example is Devil getting dragged through the kitchen in 5.4 — the look of surprise on that one chef and the pot boiling in front of the other. It feels like a lively, active kitchen; what you would find in a casino like this. I also love ‘Resa’s smug look of satisfaction in the first panel as Devil gets what’s coming to him. It’s like she knew this would happen and is entertained that it finally occurred. It’s a great bit of character.

And lastly, I love the way Jonathan rendered the colors in the final two panels, as Devil gets tossed out the door. The contrast between the bright lights of the casino and the alley way is just aesthetically appealing, but the light from the kitchen door causing the stark shadows on the wall behind Devil is a showcase of Jonathan’s skill.

Like I mentioned, there’s only two days left on the Footprints: Bad Luck Charm Kickstarter — please kick in if you haven’t yet!
